Rehema Chachage has been invited to take part in a production residency at le Magasin CNAC, during which the artist will work on the conception of a brand new performance project.
As part of the fourth edition of the Festival des Gestes de la Recherche, conceived by ESAD Grenoble, School of art and design, hosted again this season by Magasin CNAC, an original performance will conclude this residency and take place on 30 November 2023.
Rehema Chachage is a photographic artist born in 1987 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and currently based in Vienna, Austria, where she is pursuing a PhD in Art Practice at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. She also holds a BA in Fine Art (2009) from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, and an MA in Contemporary Art Theory (2018) from Goldsmiths, University of London. Rehema Chachage's artistic work, which was exhibited in 2022 at the Rencontres de Bamako – African biennial for photography, takes as its starting point photographic research or the photographic archive, which she constantly hybridizes with other media such as performance, video, text and installation. Her practice can be seen as a performative archive that collects stories, rituals and oral traditions in an unconventional way. Rehema recounts stories that are directly linked or connected to her matrilineage. She uses methodologies that are both embodied and analytical, employing produced or found images, written texts, oral and aural histories, melodies and relics of various re-enacted/performed rituals as sources of research (songs, names, recipes, building practices, healing rituals, scientific knowledge, etc.).
